Postevention

After a suicide, families, friends, individuals, and communities are significantly impacted, and can benefit from support and understanding. We now callthis  Suicide Postvention.
What is suicide postvention?
Suicide postvention refers to action taken after a suicide has occurred. The primary focus is on helping people cope with the suicide and reducing the damaging  consequences that include shame, guilt, shock, complicated grief and the stigma that accompanies suicide.

Is suicide postvention really a rally needed?
With way over  30,000  U. S. suicides annually, 180,000 individuals in the U. S. are in need of suicide postvention services . Every forty-two seconds, someone in the U.S. is attempting suicide, and every seventeen minutes, someone has completed a suicide. In Arizona alone last year, 800 people committed suicide. For every suicide there are at least six survivors; that left 4,800 Arizonans facing the aftermath of suicide.

Why is suicide postvention so important?
Those who have lost a loved one to suicide are 5 times more likely to attempt  suicide themselves, therefore, postvention strategies can save lives.

Survivors of Suicide helps educate and give people the tools to understand suicide postvention.
